Shanghai: Commercial Press Lt., 1914. — 2, ii, 178 p.Hai kuan yü yan pi hsü. 海關語言必須The first edition of this glossary was merely a record of such Customs phraseology as I had compiled for my own guidance, and it was published in 1908 with the hope that it might be of some assistance to others. It met with more success than I anticipated and the Inspector General saw fit to order copies for inclusion in the office libraries of the various Custom Houses — a kindness for which I was very grateful. I therefore felt justified in preparing the present volume, a carefully revised and up-to-date version of the first edition, to which over 1,000 expressions, copious notes, and a radical index have been added; while, as before, blank pages have been left for the entry of any new expressions of local or individual interest which may occur. The subjects dealt with are: Maritime Customs; Native Customs; Chinese and Foreign Trade; Postal; Political; Geographical; Miscellaneous.
