Description

The Hrad Hluboký near Hrubá Voda in the Olomouc region, founded before the middle of the 14th century by Bishop Jan Volek, an illegitimate son of Václav II, soon became the property of the feudal landowners. At the beginning of the 15th century, it was taken over by the Hussite commanders Petr Holý and Dobeslav Puchala, who transformed it into a stronghold for the Hussite side in Moravia. The castle's garrison participated in the blockade of Olomouc in 1425–1426, which led to its siege and capture in 1426 by the land militia under the leadership of Hašek of Valdštejn. The castle was never rebuilt and thus existed for only about 80 years. Due to its short history, it represents an ideal location for studying the material culture of medieval Moravia and the broader Central European area. The existing archaeological finds help refine the chronology of medieval ceramics, and metal artifacts provide valuable information about the final stage in the life of the castle. In particular, the collection of military items, corresponding to the dramatic circumstances of the castle's demise, offers significant data about the armament and equipment of fighters during the Hussite revolution.
