In the early civilisations - Egypt, Assyria and Mesopotamia, the Indus Civilisation, China - kings have used elephants in royal sacrifice, spectacular hunts, public display of live captives, and the conspicuous consumption of ivory - all of them tending toward the elephant's extinction.
