This monumental project began in early 2004 when I met with Nora L. Crandall, a lawyer and then Director of Publishing at IICLE. After some discussion, we both agreed that the time had come to prepare a handbook on intellectual property law for the Illinois bar. I knew that this would be a daunting task, but I was impressed by Nora Crandall and the IICLE editorial staff, and I decided to accept the challenge. The next step was to assemble a "dream team" of authors who were not only outstanding lawyers in the intellectual property bar but also of a genre willing to make the deep sacrifices necessary for a pro bono project. In addition, this project called for excellent writers with a proven track record. I think you will agree that I assembled such a team to prepare this handbook. There is no doubt that this IICLE handbook will stand the test of time and will prove to be an invaluable resource not only for Illinois lawyers but for lawyers all over the country. I am not aware of a comparable publication anywhere else in the country. For myself, I know that the INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW handbook will be on my desk at all times. In a matter of seconds, I can now identify the panoply of critical issues that present themselves every day to practitioners in patent, copyright, trademark, and trade secret law as well as related antitrust, licensing, Internet, and "cyberspace" areas of the law. The revised 2013 edition follows the same format. We have revised the chapters to reflect current developments in intellectual property law over the past several years. We have also added a new Chapter 19 on Software Licensing to address the unique intellectual property issues relating to software development, licensing, escrow, and regulatory issues such as export controls.
