Het vroegmiddeleeuwse grafveld van Broechem - Catalogus
Book information
Description
The chance discovery of two intact Merovingian pots in 2001 led to a large-scale archaeological investigation in the Nierlenders district of Broechem. During the research, conducted between 2001–2003 and 2007–2010, an extensive Merovingian cemetery came to light. With 513 graves, it is currently the largest early medieval burial ground in Flanders. This publication, part of the Relicta Monographs series number 17, consists of two volumes totaling 893 pages. The first volume compiles the results of the investigation. It is the first early medieval cemetery in Flanders to include significant interdisciplinary contributions: research on textiles and leather, costume studies, wood analyses, physical anthropology of cremation and dental remains, seed and fruit analysis, charcoal studies, strontium isotope analysis, and more. The second volume contains an extensive catalog of the graves and other traces, richly illustrated with grave plans and drawings of the finds.
