A contrastive study: the thesis treats the system and function of the linking elements in nominal compounds in German and Danish contrastively. Joint elements are units, which can occur as phonical units between the parts of a compound (e.g. Volks-musik ‘folk music’). In addition, zero-realization can occur (e.g. Sportsgeist ‘sportsmanship’). Due to their formal similarity to inflectional suffixes, their distribution and function are frequently compared to inflectional morphology. It shows up however, that the formal similarity does not have to entail a semantical or distributional agreement with inflectional suffixes, as can be seen by examples such as Verfassung-s-schutz ‘protection of the constitution’: The feminine first part cannot carry a genitive-s (gen. sg.: der Verfassung).
