Tokyo: Tokyo University of Foreign studies. Asian and African languages and linguistics, No.4, 2009: 133-148.This paper deals with the present tense form of the impersonal participle in Nanai. In two respects this form functions like a form associated with voice: (1) it does not agree in person with the subject, and (2) it may have passive-like meaning. However, it is not like a voice form in that it does not rearrange the argument structure of the verb or the case frame of the arguments. In many cases this form designates obligation. Based on text materials that I have collected I will examine both morphosyntactic and semantic characteristics of this form, and argue that this form has the following two major characteristics: (1) it usually occurs as the predicate of a complement clause of speech verbs and thinking verbs, and (2) the tense has future time reference relative to the time expressed by the verb of the main clause or to the time of utterance, indicating that the tense of the impersonal participle is relative rather than absolute tense.
