Gurung is a language spoken in the central west of Nepal. According to the report of the 1961 Census of Nepal, 157,778 persons claimed Gurung as their mother tongue, of whom most (146,600) lived in the western hills, especially in the districts of Lamjung, Syangja, Kaski, Gorkha, Tanahun, and Dhading. Outside Nepal Gurung communities exist in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, India, and at Gurkha Brigade posts of the Indian Army throughout India.
