It is part of the US Embassy Cham Heritage Expansion Program – a greater effort to promote first-language literacy and other cultural programming in the Cham community of Cambodia. The book assumes the reader has no knowledge of the Cham script, but it does presume that the student is a speaker of Cham and already literate in Khmer, and for this reason it is not meant as a literacy program for either the very young or for those attempting to acquire Cham as a second or foreign language.
