Book information
Description
(Hsu Kai-yu, Yang H., Liao J., Fong A.) Washington, D.C.: 1965. – 513 p.This textbook, the first of a four-volume series, was written for 9th grade American students beginning Chinese language study, but can also be modified for use in 7th or 8th grade classes. The 15 units begin with a short dialogue which introduces new vocabulary and sentence patterns. The dialogues are explained through pictures as well as a resume and translation in English. Each new grammar point is explained on a non-technical level and numerous oral drills reinforce the patterns already presented. Further aids to the student and teacher are cultural explanations, pedagogical suggestions, instructions for preparation and use of tape recordings, and an appended section introducing the Chinese writing system in correlation with the text units. Yale romanization is used throughout. The dialogues reflect common interests of American and Chinese high school age students.
