First of all they are young members of the "Descendants" group of the Belarusian Language Society. They made a Belarusian list of phrases for train- ing purposes and later decided to add English translation. It was the beginning of this phrasebook, which took several years to compile. Dzianis Tushinsky and Uladzimir Koshchanka, members of the Belarusian Language Society Secre- tariat, added and edited the English part of the phrasebook. The International transcription that is used in this publication was adapted for English speakers1 convenience by Uladzimir Koshchanka. This phrasebook could not have been published without support and financial assistance. Therefore, we express our sincere gratitude to the US Embassy Small Grants Program for financial assistance as well as to the Department for Humanitarian Activities of the Presi- dential Administration of the Republic of Belarus for understanding the importance of this publication and supporting this project. The authors hope that the publication will be used by English teachers and teachers of Belarusian as a foreign language. We believe that our phrasebook will contribute to the promotion of the mother tongue among Belarusian youth and will be a handy tool in learning Belarusian by foreigners.
