In his 1987 grammar and again in a 1990 paper, George van Driem examines, from an areal and diachronic perspective, the allophonic variants of the lateral approximant /l/ in the Phedappe dialect of Limbu and in some other languages of the Eastern Kiranti branch of Tibeto-Burman.
