Las lenguas minoritarias giran a menudo en torno a las lenguas de comunicación local, regional o nacional más próximas; estas, a su vez, conviven con lenguas internacionales, utilizadas para entenderse más allá de los límites de las fronteras nacionales o las comunidades lingüísticas, en grandes regiones continentales. Algunas de estas lenguas tienen una función puramente instrumental, utilizadas por hablantes de lenguas diferentes para comunicarse entre sí; otras son además lenguas de un gran número de hablantes, extendidas al mismo tiempo que se consolidaban y expandían grandes naciones.
