Description

Bloomington, Indiana University, The Mongolia Society, Inc., 1978, ISBN: 978-0-910980-42-5The compilation of this dictionary, from all available and existing published Oirat-Kalmyk written sources, occupied me from June, 1966 to May, 1975, and produced a base of 32,151 computerized data cards with 61,812 definitions plus much other information. In 1976 and 1977 I began the final revision and re-typing intended to produce a preliminary citation dictionary (projected at 900 pages), which would list occurrences of every word keyed to a location in a known text or glossary. My goal was to summarize the known research and scholarship to the present day in a handbook which could then be used to read Oirat texts that remain unstudied, and thus ultimately (in perhaps ten more years, I estimated) produce a relatively complete Oirat dictionary to most extant Oirat documents. The present dictionary thus will be the first half of this two-part scheme.
