Description

The Middle Kingdom and Second Intermediate Period still attract relatively little research in comparison with other periods of Ancient Egyptian history. This volume aims to fill a gap, and to promote further research into the early second millennium BC. The volume presents a collection of studies by different authors focusing on a variety of aspects of the archaeological record. Several papers present new excavation reports and hitherto unpublished objects. Other topics include the dating of the local governors at Byblos, the transmission of offices in the period, the characteristic "magical wands" or Apotropaia, burials of royal women, and particular groups of stelae, with a new date proposed for a small but well-known corpus of wooden stelae from Thebes. Together these researches build on the range of approaches presented in Middle Kingdom Studies volume 1.Table of ContentsMarilina Betrò:Tombs in transition: MIDAN.05 and windows in the early Eighteenth DynastyAnna Consonni:Precious finds from an early Middle Kingdom tomb in Thebes: reconstructing connections between the dead and their goods John Darnell, Colleen Darnell:Umm-Mawagir in Kharga Oasis: an Industrial Landscape of the Late Middle Kingdom/Second Intermediate PeriodVivian Davies:The tomb of a Governor of Elkab of the Second Intermediate Period Marleen De Meyer:An Isolated Middle Kingdom Tomb At Dayr Al-BarshaNathalie Favry:The Transmission of Offices in The Middle KingdomWolfram Grajetzki Gianluca Miniaci:The stela of the Thirteenth Dynasty treasurer Senebsumai Karin Kopetzky:Some Remarks on the Relations between Egypt and the Levant during the late Middle Kingdom and Second Intermediate PeriodIngrid Melandri:Female Burials in the Funerary Complexes of the Twelfth Dynasty: an Architectonic ApproachStephen Quirke:Diachronic questions of form and function: falcon-head utensils in Middle Kingdom contextsMohammed Gamal Rashed:The Egg is a metaphor for Isis: a Coffin Text ImageryGloria Rosati:‘Writing-Board Stelae’ with Sokar-Formula: Preliminary AccountAshraf Senussi, Said Abd Alhafeez Abd Allah Kheder:Two loose blocks from Hawara of Sobek-Hotep Julien Siesse:An unpublished Scarab of Queen Tjan (Thirteenth Dynasty) from the Louvre Museum (AF 6755) Pascal Vernus:Literary exploitation of a craftman’s device: the sandal-maker biting leather (Teaching of Chety, pSallier VIII, 12). Professional Linux kernel architecture ''Wrox programmer to programmer''--Cover. - ''What you are reading right now is the result of an evolution over more than seven years: After two years of writing, the first edition was published in German by Carl Hanser Verlag in 2003. It then described kernel 2.6.0. The test was used as a basis for the low-level design documentation for the EAL4+ security evaluation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, requiring to update it to kernel 2.6.18 (if the EAL acronym does not mean anything to you, then Wikipedia is once more your friend). Hewlett-Packard sponsored the translation into English and has, thankfully, granted the rights to publish the result. Updates to kernel 2.6.24 were then performed specifically for this book''--P. ix
