Description

Walking is a governing trope and structure as well as theme in Samuel Beckett’s work; a narrative and performance figure, a framing device and a material practice. Walking begins as a plot device and motif, expands into a compositional principle and culminates in a gressive ontology of unmotivated onwardness; peripatetic coming and going as the basis of human possibility and ethical value. His texts increasingly enact stylistically the interpenetration of mind and body in the peripatetic situation, which develops from a solipsistic evasion into an exercise in shared acquiescence in transitory being. Walking in Beckett can be palliative, epistemic, a task, a regression, a repudiation or a mourning regimen, but most innovatively it comes to serve as an ontological warrant, affirming a finite, exposed, contingent embodiment. The Beckett walk is examined with reference e.g. to cognitive and performativity theory, environmental and mobility studies, and cultural and literary history.
