Description

This is a comprehensive book on the life and works of Leon Henkin (1921–2006), an extraordinary scientist and excellent teacher whose writings became influential right from the beginning of his career with his doctoral thesis on “The completeness of formal systems” under the direction of Alonzo Church. Upon the invitation of Alfred Tarski, Henkin joined the Group in Logic and the Methodology of Science in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California Berkeley in 1953. He stayed with the group until his retirement in 1991. This edited volume includes both foundational material and a logic perspective. Algebraic logic, model theory, type theory, completeness theorems, philosophical and foundational studies are among the topics covered, as well as mathematical education. The work discusses Henkin’s intellectual development, his relation to his predecessors and contemporaries and his impact on the recent development of mathematical logic. It offers a valuable reference work for researchers and students in the fields of philosophy, mathematics and computer science Front Matter....Pages I-XXII Front Matter....Pages 1-1 Leon Henkin....Pages 3-22 Lessons from Leon....Pages 23-25 Tracing Back “Logic in Wonderland” to My Work with Leon Henkin....Pages 27-31 Henkin and the Suit....Pages 33-34 A Fortuitous Year with Leon Henkin....Pages 35-40 Leon Henkin and a Life of Service....Pages 41-55 Front Matter....Pages 57-57 Leon Henkin and Cylindric Algebras....Pages 59-66 A Bit of History Related to Logic Based on Equality....Pages 67-71 Pairing Logical and Pedagogical Foundations for the Theory of Positive Rational Numbers—Henkin’s Unfinished Work....Pages 73-91 Leon Henkin the Reviewer....Pages 93-133 Henkin’s Theorem in Textbooks....Pages 135-148 Henkin on Completeness....Pages 149-175 Front Matter....Pages 177-177 The Countable Henkin Principle....Pages 179-201 Reflections on a Theorem of Henkin....Pages 203-216 Henkin’s Completeness Proof and Glivenko’s Theorem....Pages 217-223 From Classical to Fuzzy Type Theory....Pages 225-247 The Henkin Sentence....Pages 249-263 April the 19th....Pages 265-278 Henkin and Hybrid Logic....Pages 279-306 Changing a Semantics: Opportunism or Courage?....Pages 307-337 Back Matter....Pages 339-351
