Description

This study evaluated how women experienced gender inequality within the role leadership of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) denomination. A phenomenological approach was used to reveal the lived experiences of 11 women who were members of three PCA churches in the suburban Philadelphia area. Some participants were satisfied with and accepting of gendered leadership roles in the PCA. Others did not accept the roles and felt oppressed and marginalized by the restrictions. The majority of women felt confused by scripture passages interpreted to put women in submission to male authority. They believed that men in the PCA should find a way to include female input in the decision-making process of the church. Overall, the women felt that looking at how Jesus treated women was the best way to understand how women were supposed to be treated.
