Second Edition 1965, with a Commentary on War since 1942. Third Impression 1971.This study of war was initiated at the University of Chicago in 1926. It has involved consultations with numerous members of the University of Chicago faculty and others and the preparation of over fifty studies by research assistants and members of the faculty. Sixteen of these have been published in books or as journal articles. A more extensive account of the investigation and the titles of the special studies are contained in Appendix I of this volume. A number of other co-operative investigations of war, which contributed ideas and inspiration for this study, are mentioned in Appendix II.
