Following in the tradition of his eminently popular earlier works, Professor Paul MacKendrick combines archaeology and history in an exploration of the influence of Rome on the civilization and culture of France. Gaul was one of Rome’s richest provinces for almost five hundred years, and the Emperors lavished on it some of their most splendid monuments and buildings, many of which may still be seen today. In this impressive display of archaeological detective work, Professor MacKendrick pieces together a political, social and religious history of Roman France from evidence as varied as massive triumphal arches, tombstones and shards of pottery. In addition, he demonstrates the influence of Roman culture on France centuries after the fall of the Empire, and assesses the relationship of Roman Gaul to the beauty of present- day Paris.
