From the Preface: In the early years of the present century the study of radiationless transitions following ionization of atoms in inner levels provided important confirmatory evidence for the Bohr-Rutherford atom. Later the quantitative interpretation of transition rates for these processes constituted not the least of the many spectacular achievements of quantum mechanics. The importance of Auger transitions in the detailed interpretation of X-ray spectra is now generally recognized. Interest in the subject has recently been renewed in connexion with the study of artificial radioactivity and of the possibility of the production of inner shell ionization by the processes of K capture and the internal conversion of y radiation. The present work aims at giving a reasonably complete discussion of the Auger Effect. But owing to its close relationship to the Auger Effect it was felt that a discussion of the internal conversion of y-radiation would also fit naturally into the framework of the present book. Owing to the rapid rate of development it is difficult to be up-to-date in this field, but it is hoped that Chapter v gives a fairly complete picture of the position up to December 1950.
