Philippine Left: Political Crisis and Social Change

This book is not intended to “teach” any lessons, so much af to publicise and synthesise a number of debates. These debates have important implications for broader audiences concerned with progressive social transformation. It is hope­ fully a timely contribution. Scholars and activists have recently focused on the extraordinary level of change that has occurred in the East Asian region. In many countries the other side of the capitalist transformation that has occurred became particularly evident. In the aftermath of the crisis there has been a w^ve of politi­ cal and social upheaval, most notably in Malaysia and Indonesia, where the com­ bination of political and economic crises has created volatile situations. These provide enormous opportunities for the progressive social movements there. The mistakes and confusions that occurred in the Philippines in the 1980s, where a similar crisis existed, provide many important lessons for these movements.
