En la apertura de este Seminario, Barthes define Lo Neutro como "aquello que desbarata el paradigma", es decir, aquello que no permite resolver el sentido por el método binario, que no permite pensar tampoco en ninguna superación de oposiciones, en ningún final de proceso o estabilidad de cualidades en tensión. Lo Neutro como pliegue íntimo y como categoría mayor que desestabiliza todas las categorías y todos los sistemas; lo Neutro como llave maestra.
