Description

Metaphysics or Ontology?treats the evolution of the object of metaphysics from being, to the concept of being, to, finally, the object (thought). Possible being must be non-contradictory, but an object of thought includes anything a human being can think, including contradictions and nothingness. When the concept of being, or object of thought, replaces existence as the object of metaphysics, it becomes something other than metaphysics--ontology, or something beyond ontology. However, ontology cannot examine existence because it only investigates concepts and possibility. Only classical metaphysics investigates reality qua reality. This book masterfully treats the history of this controversy and many other important metaphysical questions raised over the centuries Metaphysics or Ontology?......Page 3 Copyright......Page 4 Dedication......Page 5 Contents......Page 7 Foreword......Page 11 Preface......Page 13 Introduction......Page 15 Part 1: On the Origin of Metaphysics......Page 23 1 From Sophía to Philosophía......Page 25 2 From Philosophy (philosophía) to Meta-physics (tà metà tà physiká)......Page 36 3 From tà metà tà physiká to Metaphysics......Page 50 4 The Autonomy of Metaphysics......Page 72 5 Ontology in the Middle Ages......Page 75 Summary of Part 1......Page 88 Part 2: The Rise of Ontology......Page 89 6 Descartes and Malebranche—The Return of Augustinianism......Page 91 7 British Philosophy: The Marginalization of Metaphysics......Page 96 8 The Founders of Ontology: From Lorhard to Clauberg......Page 104 9 Ontology before Metaphysics: From Wolff to Kant......Page 114 10 Logic as Ontology: Hegel......Page 127 11 The Apotheosis of Mathematics: Bolzano, Frege, and Meinong......Page 131 12 Phenomenology apart from Metaphysics: Husserl, Ingarden, Heidegger......Page 140 13 Metaphysics as Ontology: Nicolai Hartmann......Page 162 14 Analytic Philosophy: A Metaphysics of Conceptual Schemata......Page 169 15 Metaphysics or Ontology of Process?......Page 178 16 Negative Ontology: Adorno......Page 180 17 Postmoderism: The End of Metaphysics, or the End of Ontology?......Page 190 Summary of Part 2......Page 198 Part 3: Metaphysics or Ontology: Disputed Questions......Page 201 18 Being or the Concept of Being?......Page 203 19 Real Being or Possible Being?......Page 224 20 Existence: Act or Modus?......Page 246 21 Essence Instead of Being......Page 277 22 Ontology: Unreal Reality......Page 316 23 Ontology and the Object......Page 329 24 Intentionality: Outside of Reality......Page 357 25 Ontology and the Subject......Page 370 26 Ontology and System......Page 384 27 Univocity or Analogy?......Page 419 28 Metaphysics, Ontology, Onto-Theology?......Page 435 Summary of Part 3......Page 440 Conclusion......Page 441 Bibliography......Page 445 Index of Names......Page 465 Index of Subjects......Page 469
