While it is relatively easy to gain access to present-day aircraft and take the many specific and detailed photographs that are required, obtain­ing such photographs of subjects which are no longer operational is far more difficult.In 1987, The F6F Hellcat in Detail & Scale, became the first book in the Detail & Scale Series to feature a World War II fighter. This was followed in 1988 by The F4F Wildcat in Detail & Scale. Both of these titles were made possible because the Grumman History Center had maintained extensive files of detailed photographs for most of the aircraft the company had produced.
