L'obesita costituisce il problema nutrizionale piu frequente nei paesi industrializzati. In Italia, un bambino su quattro e sovrappeso, uno su dieci e obeso. Inoltre, i risultati di recenti indagini epidemiologiche suggeriscono che il numero dei bambini obesi sembra destinato ad aumentare ulteriormente. L'obesita esordita in eta giovanile costituisce un problema soprattutto a causa di due fattori: la persistenza dell'obesita in eta adulta e l'elevato rischio di morbilita: in piu del 50% dei casi il bambino obeso mantiene il suo eccesso ponderale anche in eta adulta; complicanze legate all'eccesso ponderale, quali l'intolleranza al glucosio ed il diabete, l'ipertensione arteriosa e le dislipidemie, un tempo proprie solo del soggetto obeso adulto sono riscontrabili in soggetti obesi gia durante l'eta evolutiva.L'estensione del fenomeno obesita ed il suo progressivo aggravarsi impongono la realizzazione di efficaci interventi preventivi e terapeutici. Questo volume riporta i piu recenti aggiornamenti sui fattori genetici, metabolici e psicologici coinvolti nel determinare lo sviluppo dell'obesita nell'eta evolutiva, e suggerimenti basati sull'evidenza scientifica per il suo trattamento.
