El libro se compone de diez estudios lingüísticos y sociolingüísticos sobre lenguas americanas que tratan temas relacionados tanto con su historia, como con su presente, y que van desde un análisis crítico de ideologías coloniales en su descripción lingüística, pasando por nuevas propuestas sobre su tipología morfológica o el concepto colonial de la lengua general del Inca, los análisis de los resultados del contacto lingüístico o de temas gramaticales como el tópico discursivo o las categorías de tiempo y modo, hasta los ensayos sobre la revalorización social de estas lenguas, su revitalización o la articulación legislativa de su lugar en los medios de comunicación.
