Description

'Insurrectionist Ethics' is the name given to denote the myriad forms of justification for radical social transformation in the interest of freedom for oppressed people. It is a set of advocacy systems that usually aim at liberation for specified populations under siege in a given society. While the identities of these beleaguered groups is always intersectional, one salient criterion of group membership is often chosen to be the rallying point for solidarity. Whether the movement is “Black Lives Matter, “Gay Pride”, or “Poor People’s Campaign,” at the nucleus of each is a cry for emancipation. The contributions in this volume put forward bold, forcefully argued,  provocative claims that challenge in a fundamental and radical way the presuppositions, values, and beliefs that underwrite the systems and structures that insurrectionist ethics calls into question. The volume begins with a section defining and theorizing what insurrectionist ethics is, and then moves to a section studying insurrectionist ethics across the Americas. Additional sections focus on applications of and correctives to insurrectionist ethics, pragmatism and naturalism, and the past, present, and future of insurrectionist ethics.  Foreword Notes Preface Acknowledgements Contents Notes on Contributors Part I: Insurrectionist Ethics: Conceptions and Contexts Chapter 1: The Very Idea of Insurrectionist Ethics David Walker’s Appeal The Framework for Insurrectionist Ethics Implications and Applicability beyond Slave Revolts References Chapter 2: Revisioning Unalignment and Freedom: Insurrectionist Ethics in Marlon James’ The Book of Night Women Introduction to Insurrectionist Ethics Unaligned Insurrectionist Ethics in The Book of Night Women The Book of Night Women Insurrection in Jamaica Unaligned Insurrectionist Ethics in The Book of Night Women Conclusion References Chapter 3: Self-respect and the Obligation to Resist Oppression Introduction Hay’s Framework Hay vs. Insurrectionist Ethics Conclusion References Part II: Insurrectionist Ethics across the Americas Chapter 4: Theologizing Insurrection: On the Religious Dimension of Insurrectionist Ethics Divergent Foundations for Insurrectionist Ethics The Prophetic Roots of Insurrectionist Ethics Insurrectionist Ethics and Inter-American Liberation Theology On the Religious Aspect of Insurrectionist Ethics “Theologizing” Insurrection On Insurrectionist Theology of Liberation Conclusion References Chapter 5: Vicente Riva Palacio’s Mexican Insurrectionist Ethics Introduction A Brief Overview of Vicente Riva Palacio’s Life and Political Activities Insurrectionist Ethics: Four Central Features The Four Key Features of Insurrectionist Ethics in the Work of Riva Palacio Conclusion References Chapter 6: Resistance and Multiplicity: Insurrectionist Ethics and Afro-Indigenous Acts of Solidarity Locke and Harris on Cultural Pluralism and Critical Relativism Locke and Harris on Representative Types Multiplicitous Resistance among Black, Indigenous, and Afro-Indigenous Communities References Part III: Insurrectionist Ethics: Applications and Correctives Chapter 7: Insurrectionist Ethics, Moral Suasion, and Violent Protests for Poor Policing Moral Suasion and Insurrectionist Ethics An Evaluation of Suasion and Peaceful Protests An Evaluation of Insurrection and Violent Protests References Chapter 8: Anti-ethics as Insurrectionist Ethics: An Analysis of the Normative Foundations of Philosophies Born of Struggle Introduction: Anti-Ethics as Ante-Ethics “You Must Choose”: Idealist or Realist Ethical Hope Ethical Alienation as Spiritual Death The Ethical Stance of Anti-ethics Respect for Persons and the Duty of Insurrection Conclusion References Part IV: Insurrectionist Ethics: Pragmatism and Naturalism Chapter 9: Leonard Harris’s Insurrectionist “Challenge” to Pragmatism References Chapter 10: Responding to Racial Injustice: Insurrection and Social Justice Pragmatism in Ida B. Wells-Barnett and Richard Rorty Insurrection and Normativity Ida B. Wells-Barnett and Critical Praxis Rorty’s Alternative Normative Resources Fostering Relations of Responsiveness Conclusion References Chapter 11: Discernment behind Asylum Walls; Or, The Limits of Efficacious Reasoning Thinking within This Cauldron of Constant Death Condemning Racism without a Totalizing Account Enlightenment Rationality (from the Other Side of the Barricado) Agonism or Antagonism? Professional Linux kernel architecture ''Wrox programmer to programmer''--Cover. - ''What you are reading right now is the result of an evolution over more than seven years: After two years of writing, the first edition was published in German by Carl Hanser Verlag in 2003. It then described kernel 2.6.0. The test was used as a basis for the low-level design documentation for the EAL4+ security evaluation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, requiring to update it to kernel 2.6.18 (if the EAL acronym does not mean anything to you, then Wikipedia is once more your friend). Hewlett-Packard sponsored the translation into English and has, thankfully, granted the rights to publish the result. Updates to kernel 2.6.24 were then performed specifically for this book''--P. ix
