From the Wikipedia website: The early versions of the Bf 109G resembled closely the Bf 109 F-4 and carried the same basic armament - however, on all Gustav, the firepower could be increased with the R#252;stsatz VI field kit, i. E. Two underwing 20mm MG 151/20 gondola cannons in aerodynamic fairings under the wings. From the spring of 1943, the G-series saw the appearance of bulges in the cowling when the 7.92 mm MG 17 was replaced with the 13 mm MG 131 heavy machine guns (G-5 onwards) due to the latters much larger Breechblock, and on the wings (due to larger tyres) , leading to the Bf 109G-6s nickname The Bulge (German: Die Beule).
