Helsinki: Kikimora Publications. 2006. p. 63-84.The town of Sokol is situated in the Vologda Oblast and has two pulp and paper enterprises as well as furniture production. In this chapter we will concentrate mainly on the larger mill in the town, the Sokol’skii pulp and paper mill. The other pulp mill, Sukhonskii, will only briefly be discussed. As the largest forest industry enterprise in the Vologda Oblast, the Sokol’skii mill is important not only to the economy of the town, but also to the whole region. In the following we will, first, illuminate the connected histories of the Sokol’skii mill and the town of Sokol and analyse the local socio-economic situation during the economic reforms since the early 1990s.
