Dans ce livre qui fut un evenement lors de sa premiere parution en 1981, les deux historiens nord-americains revelaient que la politique antisemite menee en France des l'ete 1940 etait due au seul gouvernement de Vichy, sans pressions directes allemandes. La legislation de Vichy facilita meme le projet d'extermination nazi lorsque les deportations a Auschwitz commencerent en 1942.A l'epoque, la question de la responsabilite du regime de Vichy n'etait deja plus completement refoulee mais le sujet etait traite en marge et l'acces aux archives francaises et allemandes extremement laborieux.Beaucoup de choses ont change depuis (ouverture des archives, reconnaissance du role de l'Etat francais dans la deportation des Juifs, etc.) et ont permis aux auteurs de traiter une matiere abondante pour approfondir et affiner leur demonstration.Ainsi, l'idee qui se repand actuellement que la survie de 75 % des Juifs de France est un resultat louable, et que ce resultat heureux est en partie attribuable a Vichy qui aurait sacrifie les Juifs etrangers pour epargner les Juifs francais, ne tient pas longtemps face a une analyse approfondie.Il est crucial de lire aujourd'hui ce classique enrichi et mis a jour, et de s'elever contre ceux qui se demandent pourquoi tant de Juifs ont survecu en France quand il faudrait plutot comprendre pourquoi tant ont peri."
