This book unfolds from the premise that Native American and Chicano authors of the Southwestern United States need to be considered and studied as a coherent cultural and social group in order to recognize the commonalities of their works as indigenous people of the region and to distinguish them from other so-called 'ethnic' American writers. Using an interdisciplinary approach, this book investigates the historical, political , religious, social and literary connections between Native American and Chicano literature in order to demonstrate that in their effort to establish a unified sense of self, these authors apply similar strategies to mediate the cultural influences of their colonizer's society, hence forming bicultural, hybrid selves. While other critical studies have recognized the influence of (ancient) Indian culture on contemporary Chicano literature as well as its relationship to other cultural influences, thereby drawing attention to the notion of hybridity, this book is the first to provide an in-depth study of the intersections between contemporary Native American and Chicano culture as reflected in their literatures.
