Der Obertitel zeigt den gemeinsamen methodischen Nenner der Arbeiten an: sprachliche Klarheit, begriffliche Klärungen, rationale Argumentation, Verzicht auf Wortspiele und Hypostasierung von Metaphern, der Versuch, die innere Logik der sprachlichen Kunstwerke herauszuarbeiten. Mit diesen Mitteln einer "analytisch orientierten Literaturwissenschaft" widmet sich der Autor kulturpolitischen und kulturhistorischen Themen sowie Studien zu Formen von Meta-Literatur, bezogen vor allem auf Jane Austen und Lord Byron. Schließlich legt der Beckett-Experte Breuer fünf neuere Arbeiten über den irischen Nobelpreisträger vor: vergleichende Studien zu anderen Autoren (Flann O'Brien, Peter Ustinov, Peter Handke), die Einordnung Becketts in die Literaturgeschichte (Modernismus oder Postmoderne), die Gestaltung von absence présente in ausgewählten Werken sowie einen biographischen Essay über Begegnungen mit berühmten Beckett-Forschern.
