The Indonesian Book of Common Prayer in the Latin Rite (2024) presents a historic adaptation of the English liturgy into the Indonesian tongue, specifically tailored for use within the Latin Rite tradition, while still being rooted in the rich heritage of past Books of Common Prayer. From the Preface: Our Gracious Heavenly Father, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in His boundless grace, has granted unto His Church on earth a goodly and valuable heritage of freedom: that the Church which His only-begotten Son has purchased with His precious blood may, without offence, embrace sundry forms and usages in His worship, so long as the very heart of the true faith is kept inviolate. The liturgy, therefore, may be altered, abridged, enlarged, or otherwise ordered, whilst adhering to the Scriptures and tradition, as may seem most fitting for the edification of the people, according to various exigencies. It seems needless – and not our purpose here, for it would prove of little profit – to rehearse the divers alterations and amendments in this book, amongst which are the additions of services of ‘Prayers at Mid-day for Missions’, for the spread of Christ’s faith to all heathen lands, and the Order for Compline, a pious observance to close the day in peace and thanksgiving; both of which are adapted from the 1962 Canadian Book of Common Prayer. Others shall readily appear, and the reason thereof also, upon a comparison of this Book with the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, the ‘Divine Worship’ Missal, and with the Canadian Books of Common Prayer, whereupon this adaptation into the Latin Rite in the Indonesian vulgar tongue is chiefly founded. The Kalendar in this book generally follows that of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Readings appointed for the Administration of the Lord’s Supper may be taken from authorised sources. It is our fervent prayer that this book may prove useful for the edification of all men, and that it may serve as an instrument in God’s hand to bring the heathen to the true Christian religion, that they may be joined into the company of the faithful and be partakers of everlasting life in Christ our Lord, to whom be all honour and glory, world without end.
