In the countries in which the Jews settled, they were a minority, subject to the whims of the rulers and the populace. In times of crisis, they became the victims of mass slaughter. In periods of relative calm, they poured their gifts into the surrounding societies, many gaining renown in economic and political life, and in the arts and sciences. But at all times they clung to their faith and their traditions, and never forgot their roots. The survival, against almost impossible odds, of this tiny and ancient nation, and the preservation of their religious and national identity, are dramatic phenomena unique in history.
