Symbolic Logic
Book information
Description
Since it was first published in 1932, this book has been among the most frequently cited works on symbolic logic. The work gives a full discussion of the logical paradoxes; perhaps the fullest ever set down. It offers one of the best coverages of truth-value tables and the matrix method. The exposition of modal logic and many-valued logic is extremely clear, and includes Professor Lewis’ own contributions. If you are already familiar with modern mathematical logic, but want a grounding in classical theory, you will find that this volume provides a classical frame of reference for the discussions of contemporary research. Of particular value are the sections on strict implication, the Polish logicians (Lukasiewicz and others), and the existence theorems. This edition is supplemented with a brief summary of Strict Implication and the series of Related Systems: S1-S5. – This Dover edition, first published in 1959, is an unabridged and corrected republication of the first edition published by The Century Company in 1932. This Dover edition also contains a new Appendix by Clarence Irving Lewis.
