Description

P. Valavanis' Marathon Museum fascicle reflects the decision made on the completion of the building in 1974 to transfer from Athens the contents of the Athenian burial mound, apart from a well-known loutrophoros-amphora by a big-name painter. These vessels joined material from other local sites, including the Vrana mound; they range from standard black-figure lekythoi to a loutrophoros, a red-figure chous with a running child, and even a janiform head-vase. The quality of the photographs is high; profile drawings are on the increase in CVA fascicles, and this one exploits the presence of some rarer shapes, especially plates, as well as the more standard cups. Contributors to the series vary considerably in the length of commentary they give; Valavanis' reflect a tendency visible in recent volumes to extended bibliographical references, beyond those which support discussion of identified parallel items.
