This volume is a testimony to the scholarship and successful achievements of Women's Studies over the last decades. While there are many areas in which the aims and explanations of Women's Studies have not been achieved (particularly in relation to our own personal/political pressures), it is also important to note that there are some areas of achievement (particularly in relation to the exposure of the construction of knowledge and the power of the academy) that go beyond even the wildest dreams of some of the early academic activists. Women's Studies has gone a long way, and the fact that it has not reached its desired destination should not stop us from appreciating the distances that have been traveled and the enormous gains that have been made. In many institutions, there is cause for commendation, and celebration. Celebration because, as this volume makes clear, the development of Women's Studies, and its ways of knowing, constitute a challenge to some of the patterns of power and influence in academe.
