Germanic communities of the ‘Marcomannic’ settlement zone: structure and dynamics

Germanic societies of the Middle Danube during the Roman period have long been the subject of archaeological research. Available data are extensive, diverse, and scattered across various published sources. The presented publication focuses on a comprehensive and previously unseen heuristic approach to archaeological data within the "Marcomannic" settlement zone (Moravia, Lower Austria, and the Slovakian Zahorie region). The depth and extent of the collected data allow for quantitative investigation of key activity areas (settlements and cemeteries), specific contexts, and individual artifacts to assess various aspects of potential developmental trajectories of Germanic societies in the region. The book, using quantitative methodology, presents an analysis of spatial distribution (particularly Roman-origin imports), a socio-anthropological perspective, demographic conditions in the region, and provides a new insight into the social structures and interactions of Germanic communities within the "Marcomannic" settlement zone.
