Description

This broad relation of the humanities to social existence might beconsidered an external application of Gadamer’s thought, one of themany ways in which hermeneutics is currently being taken up by otherdisciplines.25 Yet since historical effect, on Gadamer’s conception, is auniversal characteristic of human hermeneutic situatedness, it is presentwherever we engage in or draw on experience. Moreover, Gadamer himself stressed the expansion of hermeneutics beyond the sphere of philosophy and the humanities into issues of social reason and political discourse, such that these applications are actually endemic to hermeneuticpractice itself. In this respect, the present work aims to make explicitsome of the core theoretical commitments of Gadamer’s thought, tosynthesize strains that weave throughout his corpus, and to underscoretheir practical ramifications. It ultimately treats historicity as an effectthat pervades human conduct and that accordingly poses to everyone areflective and ethical task.
