Description

The following elderly sloops were all declared obsolete early in 1939 and were to be paid-off in 1942, but the outbreak of war provided them all with a further lease of life. The Diligente was serving as a seaplane tender and was laid-up in the U.K. after June 1940 until the end of the war, and the Engageante—laid-up at Algiers—was also intended to convert to this role. The Conquerante, which was in the U.K. in 1940, was briefly employed by the Royal Navy as a patrol vessel. The four Etourdi type vessels were the survivors of a class of 23 which had been built rapidly during the First World War and engined with machinery removed from old torpedo boats which had been scrapped, while the Luronne of the same type had been engined with diesel machinery. All these vessels had clipper stems except the Conquerante and Diligente which had straight stems.
