While previous scholarship has mostly focused on concrete cases of magicians, on law cases brought against them, or on conflicts between the Church and magical practitioners in the pre-modern world, the present volume offers a range of studies focusing on textual representations of magicians and magic, both fictional and historical, reflecting a critical dimension in the history of mentality.
