This book examines Platos account in the Timaeus of a third kind and its cosmic members, a material principle and place.Bereits Aristoteles geht auf die Frage ein, in welchem Sinn Platons Einführung einer »dritten Gattung« neben Sein und Werden in seiner Kosmologie im Timaios zu verstehen ist. Die Gründe, aus denen Platon zur Erklärung des Werdens eine Art »Gefäß« zur Aufnahme des Werdenden für notwendig hält, haben Anlass zu vielerlei Spekulation gegeben, weil Platon selbst offensichtlich Schwierigkeiten mit der Spezifizierung dieser neuen Wesenheit hat und daher verschiedene Metaphern zu ihrer Verdeutlichung verwendet.Millers Forschungsbeitrag zu dieser Frage ist spannend und geistreich geschrieben und dürfte einen Markstein für die zukünftige Diskussion darstellen. Er zeigt, dass die »dritte Gattung« auf einer zwar komplexen, aber in sich klaren Konzeption beruht.
