A Visita dos Espíritos: ritual, história e transformação entre os Matses (Pano) da Amazônia brasileira

This thesis takes as its central thread the analysis of the ritual constitution of the maculine and feminine person and a large collective initiation ritual, among the Matses, a Pano-speaking people of the Javari river basin, on the Brazil-Peru border. The thesis discusses the consequences for the Matses of the current impossibility of performing the male initiation ritual as a result of the transgression of a prohibition, which occurred with the arrival in Matses territory of missionaries of the Summer Institute of Linguistics. Analysing the transformations of this ritual in time and space, this study contributes new elements with which to think through the question of “cultural change” among native peoples in colonial situations. Essa tese tem como fio condutor a análise dos rituais de constituição das pessoas femininas e masculinas e de um grande ritual coletivo de iniciação entre os Matses, povo de língua Pano habitante da bacia do rio Javari, na fronteira Brasil-Peru. A tese aborda as consequências vividas pelos Matses pela impossibilidade atual da realização do ritual de iniciação masculina, resultado da transgressão de uma interdição, ocorrida com a chegada de missionárias do Summer Institute of Linguistics no território matses. Analisando as transformações deste ritual no espaço e no tempo, o trabalho contribui com novos elementos para pensar a questão da “mudança cultural” entre povos nativos em situações coloniais.
