The Figueiredo Report, authored by prosecutor Jader de Figueiredo Correia in 1967, exposed atrocities committed by Brazil's Indigenous Protection Service (Serviço de Proteção ao Índio) against the country's native populations. Commissioned by Minister of the Interior Albuquerque Lima, the report revealed crimes such as genocide, torture, abduction, forced labor, biological and chemical attacks, sexual violence, and land theft, highlighting the systemic violence and genocide faced by Indigenous peoples in Brazil. Despite its revelations, the report initially led to limited consequences for those responsible.The investigation documented horrific events, including the Massacre of the 11th Parallel targeting the Cinta Larga people and the deliberate poisoning of the Tapayuna people with arsenic-laced sugar. The publication of excerpts in the Sunday Times by Norman Lewis in 1969 spurred the creation of Survival International, an organization advocating for Indigenous rights globally.In response to the findings, Minister Albuquerque Lima dismissed over 50 government officials. The Serviço de Proteção ao Índio was subsequently replaced by the Fundação Nacional do Índio (FUNAI), a new agency tasked with Indigenous protection.Though believed to have been destroyed in a 1967 fire, the report resurfaced in December 2012 during archival investigations conducted by Brazil's National Truth Commission. Rediscovered at the Museum of the Indian (Museu do Índio), the report spans over 7,000 pages divided into 30 chapters, though one chapter remains missing.
