Women, one assumes, have always been religious, but women have not always written theology. Indeed, if one is considering theology as an academic discipline ( certainly not the only definition) then women have only been admitted in any numbers to universities as students of theology since the Second World War. A remarkable feature of the theological scene in recent years thus has been the steady increase of writings by women on religious matters, and writings about women in religious faith and life. Almost inevitably, many of these writings are by new pens and have appeared in journals of limited circulation. Yet it is sometimes at ·such edges and not from the heartlands that the faith grows.
