First Lessons In Manx / Lessoonyn Ayns Chengey Ny Mayrey Ellan Vannin
Book information
Description
First published 1901; second edition, 1947; this the third revised edition published 1966. 'It would be well, too, if the actual pronunciation of the native Manx speakers in the various parts of the Island were taken down accurately in some such notation as that of the "Association Phonetique Internationale." The standard system of Manx spelling is, unfortunately, not very well fitted for representing the spoken sounds with exactness. Many words, in themselves simple, are spelled in a curiously clumsy way, as if in imitation of the awkward heaping up of letters sometimes met with in English.' -- Preface to the First Edition https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manx_language
