Gates, the extrovert, and Rockefeller, the recluse, soon came to respect one another. Gates had to adapt to Rockefeller's personal reliance on homeopathy; he received a memo from his employer stating, "I am a strong homeopathist." The year after reading Osler's book, Gates told the secretary of the University of Chicago that "Mr. Rockefeller has been and is opposed to allopathic medicine."1° When Dr. Biggar, who practised homeopathy and was Rockefeller's personal physician and friend, criticized the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, Gates countered by writing to Rockefeller, "He has not kept up with the progress of medicine and is still living in the twilight of two or three generations ago. His paper represents the sentiments of about fifty years ago."ll Later, when his adviser had persuaded him to support medical education and research, Rockefeller paid so little personal attention to how his money was being used that, years after the great Rockefeller Institute of Medical Research had opened in New York City, his son complained that he had never been inside the building to see what his money had helped create
