Description

Despite the central government's attempts to assimilate the USSR's non-Russian peoples, the outlying republics - especially those in Central Asia - have resisted strongly. This book analyzes Soviet policy toward the region over the past few decades. The contributors examine the mechanisms through which the central, Communist Party-led government sought to achieve its aims and assess the results of those efforts within the region's social, political, economic, demographic and cultural contexts.
