Description

Advances in media and radio signal processing have been the driving forces behind the industrial and social changes enabled by the widespread use of smartphones and mobile multimedia communications. We started our research on these exciting topics in January 1999, as the expectations for 3G mobile communications systems and their multimedia services were generating great excitement. Our research, initially from an academic viewpoint for a doctoral dissertation, shifted to more practical concerns when Dr. Jung joined Samsung Electronics and began working to design 3G and 4G mobile commu- nications systems. We realized that many of the approaches and assumptions made in the literature were not realistic in actual systems and we identified new opportunities for improvements.
